Subverse Un/seen

Domestic swimming pools can be a symbol of luxury and excess. A municipal swimming pool, however, takes on a slightly different connotation; one of communal respite and shelter from the sweltering city heat. Both spaces share one similarity – the world above and below the water’s surface present a dichotomy of experience. We are familiar with scenes of sun bathers, pool parties, and divers as visions of the world above the surface of the water. The world underneath is mysterious, inaudible, and visually obscured as light and sound waves are transformed by the presence of water. This subterranean universe or “SUBVERSE” offers a space for secret activity. SUBVERSE Un/seen – is a multimedia performance installation that offers a glimpse into this strange world. Subsurface Un/SEEN is a live multimedia performance that uses manipulated sound loops and improvised Capoeria movement to transform a derelict municipal pool into the “SUBVERSE”. This project allows for transformation of a physical space into a performance space while at the same time questioning how communities are affected by art and intervention and entertain the dialectic of this side and beyond.
