Spray (2010) Modified Brass Fire Hose Nozzle with Photographic Diptych on Archival Paper

This piece addresses loss, remembrance, and celebration. By drilling a spiraling pattern of holes into a fire hose nozzle I decommissioned its historical use as a crowd control weapon. Now it is a celebratory object that we can use to reflect on the sacrifices many people made for this country in the 50’s and 60’s. The modified nozzle is presented with two contrasting images. The subject of one image is Rosa Parks following bus desegregation; the other is an image of two Black males riding a fully integrated bus to London during the same time. The image was extracted from “How to Ride a Bus” an instructional short by the British Colonial Film Council.
