Memorial to Enslaved Laborers (2020), Permanent Public Memorial, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA

I am a member of a team of architects, artists, and designers, who completed the design and installation of the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA in 2020. I was invited to the team to research and design an expression for the exterior surface of the memorial. The design was informed by an extensive community engagement process that clarified the importance of a visual representation of enslaved people. I participated in conversations at UVA and around Charlottesville and Albemarle County in places such as the Ebenezer Baptist Church, The Daughters of Zion Cemetery, The Jefferson School, Charlottesville High School, and the Monticello and Montpellier plantations.
