Aseje (2017) Augmented Reality Installation, Wave Hill, Bronx, NY

Aseje, meaning everywhere in Urhobo, is an outdoor location-based Augmented Reality (AR) installation, a series of composite views that result from superimposing computer-generated images on a user's view of the real world. Utilizing some of the forms and patterns Otitigbe researched during his Sunroom Project Residency at Wave Hill, he conceives of the landscape as a frame for virtual images that are accessible on a smartphone or tablet at various points along Wave Hill’s Abrons Woodland paths. Unseen by the naked eye but “situated” in the landscape, these forms become a virtual part of the woodland, enabling exploration without intervention. Through Aseje, Otitigbe continues to exploration space and patterns while thinking deeply about what lies beyond our perception. To experience Aseje, works are visible in an interactive map provided by WallaMe. Once a visitor arrives at a location where art is installed, they can use their camera to locate the hidden work and even take a photo of themselves with the art in the cameras field of view.
